Supporting CPB

Hello everyone!

As you may or may not have noticed, we have added a "Donate" tab to CPB: Ning.  The costs of maintaining this virtual sangha on Ning are rising, and we humbly and with deep appreciation ask you for any monetary donation you might be able to give.  We are a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization and can provide you with paperwork for your tax-deductible donation.

We welcome any and all comers and questions.  Thank you for being with us here on…

George Carlin on Saving the Planet

Posted by Jai on October 20, 2011 at 7:58pm 0 Comments

An old yet provocative politically incorrect comedy bit. Some may glean some insight or value from it. While I don't agree with everything old George said, I do think humor has a way of putting controversial issues into a less rigid perspective. If nothing else it is pretty funny. /\/\/\ Jai

I thought some of you might enjoy this music video. Some of the lyrics are hard to understand but you can Google them. You don't have to agree with every word in it (I don't) but I think everyone can find some value in it. I love the deep flute in it.

Hello everyone.

As you may or may not know, CPB traces its academic and practice lineages in part to the Soto Zen tradition and in part to the tradition of Ki Aikido.  For this reason, CPB is particularly concerned about the recent events in Japan.  Several agencies at work helping Japan have set up online donation.  Below is a link to a Yahoo news story about several such agencies.  If you are so inclined and able to do so, please donate (remembering to make sure that the…

reading material

Does anyone here have books (or audiobooks) about Buddhism that they would like to recommend? I only have a couple and would love some guidance on what to check out next! I love to learn and enjoy using workbooks too if you know of anything good.I am especially interested in learning more about how studying/ practicing Buddhism can aid with surviving chronic pain. Thanks so much! See More

Slow move away from Ning

Hello, everyone! CPB is slowly beginning to move away from Ning as it becomes an increasingly expensive and increasingly ineffective way to navigate our online presence.  We will not disappear here overnight, and are currently investigating the best ways to archive our extensive history of information.  Please join us at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Center-for-Pragmatic-Buddhism/228178527193603 and help…See More

The habits of happiness

The students in my social responsibility class are discussing meditation this week. (This course is really about many paths to conflict resolution and provides students with a number of readings from neuroscience and cognitive psychology, social psychology, sociology, international relations, and religious studies.)In addition to reading Thich Nhat Hanh's Peace Is Every Step, I'm showing video clips about some of the scientific findings about the effectiveness of meditation for compassion,…See More
